After a short but successful run over the summer, The Last Days of Disco have upped sticks and made the move up the Kingsland Road from Shoreditch to Dalston, where they are busy making themselves at home under a furniture shop at Barden’s Boudoir. From Donna Summer to the DFA, Last Days takes you to a parallel universe where dirty throbbing dubbed out disco rules the roost, the streets are paved with the shit from Bianca Jagger’s horse and the girl down the chip shop thinks she’s Grace Jones.

The Oscillation - www.myspace.com/theoscillations
Born out of the ashes of The Orichalc Phase, The Oscillation is Demian Castellanos’ mightiest incarnation yet, a bewildering mix of pop songs and expansive psychedelic freakouts that demands comparison with the harder edge of the 70’s krautrock scene, the lambent tones of bands like Spiritualized or Loop at their most medicated, or The Ruts battling their way out of an echo chamber to a background of white noise.

Having wowed critics and punters alike with the astonishing debut set ‘Out Of Phase’, The Oscillation have gone on to become one of the most exciting live acts around today, adding a heady mix of brain frying psychedelia to the dark disco punk of many of their label mates.

Rory Phillips - www.myspace.com/roryphillipsmusic
Having spent the best part of a decade re-defining London nightlife alongside Erol Alkan at the now legendary Trash (R.I.P) and bringing mutant disco to East London with Our Disco, Rory Phillips has built a solid reputation for parties that carve their own path while packing out the dancefloor.

Continuing the tradition, Rory’s raucous headline slot at Trash’s successor Durrr and the joyful crate digging of SAY YES perfectly showcase his diverse and ever evolving musical style, showcasing the best in new music while constantly unearthing hidden gems from the past aided, of course, by his trademark telephone headphone.

Aside from his sets at the aforementioned nightclubs Rory has played to crowds all across Europe, Asia, The USA and South America, provided keyboard duties for Whitey and (most proudly) recorded a DJ session for the sadly missed John Peel Show.

Andy Blake (Dissident)
Andy blake runs the dissident.london label and has a huge collection of wild and exotic disco, italo, afro-cosmic, hi-nrg & acid house records that he regularly plays to packed dance floors at all kinds of different clubs and parties. So far in 2008 he has dj’ed to a rapturous reception at Cocadisco, Disco bloodbath, Fabric, Matter, Glasgow’s legendary club 69, Lasermagnetic, Horse meat disco, The big chill, Bestival, Scala in Berlin for Popkomm, Bloggers Delight, The Egg and many other underground disco parties. You can always expect a wild and crazy ride thru the finest dance music of the last 30 years whenever you have the chance to hear Andy dj.

Slutty Fringe DJs – www.sluttyfringe.com
Having started over two years ago as a way to blag some free music and get into clubs without queuing, Slutty Fringe has ,despite it’s success, remained a bastion of undiscovered music and slightly shabby journalism.

David H – www.be-at.co.uk
Resident and promoter of both The Last Days of Disco and the sprawling indie/electro/disco behemoth that is Be at The Proud Gallery in Camden, David has entertained crowds the world over with his inspired disco selections.

Get Ur Freq On

August 4, 2008

So after all my good intentions of keeping this blog regular like bran flakes, I play a few festivals and end up a shameful mess. Anyway… it hasn’t been all play and hopefully in the very near future I’ll be able to entertain you with some musical treats and words on the likes of Electric Minds, Stickydisc and Lo Recordings.

Till then though check out this party, going down like Paris Hilton this Friday at Jacks, near London Bridge.

nitefreq

Jack’s is a great club, that’s a bloody great lineup and if you need any more convincing we’ll be kicking things off in the main room, getting things nice and warm for Mr Baker with some NY electro/disco and Chi-Town house.

The Beach House Rules

July 9, 2008

2008 is shaping up to be a good year to be an Italian DJ, hell I’ve even considered hunting through my ancestry in the hope that some of my own potato munching ancestors might have had a touch of the Azzuri in them, but sadly that seems highly unlikely.

Anyway in an ironic twist an Italian DJ that sounds more like a face at Millwall dropped me a line yesterday. The DJ in question, Sir Billy, was also kind enough to send over his most recent mix which would sound great sitting on a beach watching the sun sink below the horizon. Of course I’m currently in an office staring at rain soaked, bored looking Italian exchange students which might not be quite so balearic but it still sounds nice nevertheless.

It’s actually got quite an early nineties Boys Own vibe to it which you dont get too much of these days, most people heading straight for an endless stream of risk free, credibility ensured re-edits that have received an official stamp of approval instead.

Anyway add to all that Sir Billy’s own biography is rather special too (see below) so it’s well worth a listen.

He’s been involved in music since 1978. Began his carrier as record collector and radio speaker. Then he’s been known as vocalist with Templebeat (a combo who gained massive airplay during the 90es, charted in Germany and Switzerlands, played several european festivals and appeared on RAI + MTV’s 120 Minutes). He started writing during the 80es for Music Club and Dynamo, now he’s a columnist for Il Mucchio Selvaggio and Il Mucchio Extra.
Remixer, alone and in collaboration with The Bloody Beetroots.
He also wrote a novel called The Queen Of Eyes.
Vinyljunkie and dj.

Quick, Clean & Efficient since last millennium.’

Saturday Nacht Fever

July 3, 2008

Henry Smithon aka Riton is back with a new project Eine Kleine Nacht Musik on Modular, inspired by the cosmic disco and krautock sounds coming out of Germany in the seventies. Recorded at Smithson’s home in Camden and in a studio in West London, Eine Kleine Nacht Musik features a orchestra of guitars, sitars, strings, glockenspiels, xylophones and most importantly a massed bank of throbbing dirty great big analogue syntesizers.

A single ‘La Serenissima/ Phantasie’ is out now with the album due to drop on the 14th of July. In the meantime Henry has been kind enough to put together one of these new fangled c90-less ‘mixtapes’ that seem to be all the rage these days, tracklist and download below.

And whilst we’re on the subject if this at all wets your whistle then I’d suggest you also check out the wonderful many legged space rock machine that is They Came From The Stars I Saw Them who have a new album out now as well.

Win Fred Deakin’s ‘Nu Balearica’ Mix CD

June 27, 2008

If you’re looking for the perfect album for this Summer then look no further than ‘Nu Balearica‘, the new 2CD mix from Lemon Jelly’s Fred Deakin. With tracks from the likes of Quiet Village, Studio, Lindstrom, Todd Terje and Aeroplane, it’s a mix that could equally soundtrack a sunny day tending the BBQ or a hot sweaty night of dancing in a basement.

Luckily for you we’re offering you the chance to do both. We have a copy of the mix to give away, just simply answer this easy question and email us the answer by Wednesday the 2nd of July to enter the draw.

Q. The three main Balearic islands are Ibiza, Mallorca and…?

And if you dont win that you can always join us for FREE next Thursday (the 3rd) down at The Last Days of Decadence on Shoreditch High Street where Fred and Reverso 68’s Pete Herbert will be joining us on the decks for the album’s official launch party. Cant say fairer than that really.

Seaside Sounds From The Long Seventies

June 26, 2008

Via the magic of the interweb LA producer Cole Medina dropped us a line about his latest re-edit. Taking a much needed razor blade to the toothsome Bee-Gees, he’s turned their ‘Love You Inside Out’ into a slow burning spaced out epic, perfect for both the start and end of the night and destined to get a good airing at my next few gigs.

Bursting onto the scene back in 2003, with his ‘Buffalo Bill’ edit on his own House Arrest label, Cole’s productions have been finding their way into all the right record boxes (Harvey, Rub’N'Tug, the DFA crew etc) ever since, whilst House Arrest has gone on to release 6 highly sought after twelves.

If you have a poke round your local vinyl emporium you might be lucky enough to pick up the last House Arrest 12″ ‘Yacht Rock Edits’ by Sleazy McQueen, alternatively hold tight for Cole’s next release ‘Red Hot’ on Prins Thomas’ Internasjonal label.

Midnight In Europe

June 26, 2008

Strange things are afoot at the circle K. Ed Banger, the Parisian blog-house heavyweight has got their swerve on and caught us off-guard signing Londoner Midnight Mike under his Mickey Moonlight name. What the fluoro kids will make of it all I have no idea but personally it’s cheered me right up.

A taster for the LP, ‘Interplanetary Music‘ should be available in one of those iconic So-Me record sleeves very soon, till then feast your eyes on this visual treat.

Shot on a Krasnogorsk-3 16mm camera at various locations in the Andromeda Galaxy.
Featuring Susumu Mukai (Zongamin), Bishi, Suzy Silver & Mickey Moonlight.
